About Dodori National Reserve

Dodori National Reserve is located along the Kenyan coast in Lamu County, encompassing a diverse mix of coastal forest, mangroves, riverine thickets, and salt marshes. Established in 1976, the reserve protects a critical habitat for numerous species including elephants, lions, leopards, and a variety of birdlife. The reserve covers a vast area of roughly 877 square kilometers and borders the Boni Forest to the west, forming part of the Northern Coastal Forest Complex. Its proximity to the Indian Ocean influences its unique ecosystems, supporting both terrestrial and marine life. Historically, the area has been inhabited by the Boni and Pokomo communities who maintain cultural ties with the land. Dodori's varied landscape provides excellent opportunities for safaris, birdwatching, and guided nature walks, with less crowded conditions compared to some more famous reserves in Kenya. Key features include the mangrove estuaries that serve as important breeding grounds for fish and bird species and the scenic Dodori River. Visitors come to experience encounters with large mammals, spotting rare and endemic birds, and explore the reserve’s remote natural beauty. The reserve is also important for conservation efforts tied to coastal biodiversity and serves as a corridor for migrating animals. Its relatively undeveloped infrastructure offers a more rustic experience for adventurous travelers interested in Kenya’s coastal wilderness. Visitors to Dodori can expect a blend of coastal climate, rich biodiversity, and immersion into one of Kenya’s lesser-known protected areas.
